Degrees Vs Skills: ‘Entrepreneurial Skills Much More Valuable Than University Degrees’ Do You Agree?

A university certificate is important but not a necessity for everyone says Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah……
Nigerians need to focus more on developing entrepreneurial skill rather than acquiring university degrees in order to find relevance in Nigeria’s consumer-based economy.
This much was stated by Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah in a Leadership interview.
He argued that the high incidence of unemployment in the country is due to the ill-placed emphasis on degrees.
According to the Bishop, the degree-by-all-means trend is a post-colonial mentality that must be done away with.
“We lost the script somewhere along the line, and the idea of a university degree smacks of post-colonial mentality,” Kukah said.
“It is only in Nigeria that you find a man with seven children who believes that all the seven children must become graduates”
Bishop Kukah said getting a university degree is not a necessity for everyone, pointing to the Igbo creative and entrepreneurship which has earned them some degree of self sufficiency.
Now guys do you really agree to all this, that entrepreneurial skill is better than university degree  in Nigeria ?

The quest by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, (names withheld) attached to Ilu-Titun, Divisional Headquarters, in Okitipupa council area of  Ondo State to satisfy his sexual urge while on duty has  allegedly  cost him his life.
He reportedly died while having s*x with a woman allegedly laced with the dreaded ‘thunder bolt’ (magun).
The officer, after reporting for duty on the ill-fated day, inspected the officers on duty.
and headed for the residence of the woman he had s*x with which is a walking distance to the police station.
It was gathered that the relationship between the lovers had been on for a long time.
Sunday Vanguard learnt that the police officer, who had no premonition that death was lurking around the corner, walked into the embrace of his lover only to somersault mid way into s*x.
It was gathered that around midnight, the woman raised the alarm, but nobody answered her following which she rushed to the police station to report the case.
He was reportedly rushed to hospital, but died   on the way. Sources said some whitish substances foamed from his mouth.
The woman involved, according to police sources, has been arrested and detained.
The image maker of Ondo State Police Command, Wole Ogodo, said he was not aware of the incident.
But a police source in Okitipupa confirmed the incident, saying it was being discussed in hushed voices within the police command in the state.
But the question now is how come it is only a woman that can be laced with magun?  do you think its proper for people to to  still indulge in such practices in this in this new age?

Boko Haram abducts politician's wife and two children in Borno state

Suspected members of Boko Haram have kidnapped the wife and two children of Alhaji Zaraye Mala Sheriff, a Councillor in Borno state who is reported to be a cousin of former Borno state, governor, Ali Modu Sheriff.
A source told Daily Trust that the men stormed the Ngala town residence of the politician in the early hours of Friday July 18th.
"The insurgents stormed the house of the councillor around 12:30am on Friday and asked the wife about her husband. They also asked her for the money he kept at home but she kept quiet. Luckily enough, Zaraye was at the other side of the house and when he heard the conversation, he fled,” a source from Ngala said.
He said angered by her silence and the absence of their target, the sect members took her and her two children away. Continue...
"Up till now, nothing has been heard of the woman and her kids. We have not heard anything about the two businessmen either,” he said.
Two other politicians, Alhaji Annur Mohammed and Liman Alhaji Hussaini were also reportedly kidnapped by the sect men.
Meanwhile there are reports that Maiduguri metropolis and its environs have been without power in the last three weeks following the destruction of electricity installations around Damboa town, 85 kilometers away from the state capital.

A senior official of the utility firm supplying the state with power, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) said the attack by Boko Haram members in the last three weeks around Damboa caused “huge damage” to their 33KVA installations.

“The problem is aggravated by the security situation around Damboa which makes it difficult for our men to effect repairs. The truth is that it will take time before electricity would be restored in Maiduguri and environs,” he said.

Kim Kardashian 'set to earn nearly $200million' from hit video game

Kim Kardashian is reportedly set to earn a whopping $200million in one year from a free video game she only launched last month which ranked number three yesterday on the iTunes charts. Bloomberg is now reporting that the game, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, could be the reality star's most lucrative venture yet. Find the report below...
"Since its June 25 release, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood has risen as high as second among most-downloaded free-to-play games at Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s U.S. App Store, and the well-reviewed title yesterday was third. Its success has driven shares of creator Glu Mobile Inc up 42%. Continue...
“It might be our biggest game of the year,” Chief Executive Officer Niccolo de Masi said in an interview. “We’re not surprised. Kim is a one-of-a-kind talent with an incredibly precise fit to the game engine that we tailored but already had in the company.”
The Kardashian game takes users inside Hollywood, guided by a virtual Kim who offers advice on how to become an A-list celebrity, starting from the so-called E-list. “Dating famous people will get you more fans, too,” instructs Kardashian, who in real life is married to rap singer Kanye West.
While the game is free to play, the goal is to get users hooked on in-app purchases such as clothing or a burst of energy needed for traipsing through Hollywood. Users can spend as much as $99.99 for 175,000 virtual dollars. A trip to Beverly Hills costs 4 game “dollars,” while 400 will buy a necklace.
Kardashian’s voice guides the uninitiated through casting calls and parties, while users dodge surly tweets from rivals.
The game gives Kardashian’s most fervent fans a new way to satisfy their appetites, de Masi said.
“Whether you’re following Kim on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or watching her show, with this game, you can play all the time,” de Masi said. “You can get your Kim interaction anytime you choose.”
Annual revenue from Kim Kardashian: Hollywood may reach $200 million, estimates Douglas Creutz, an analyst with Cowen & Co. in New York, who has the equivalent of a buy rating on Glu Mobile and expects the stock to rise to $6 in the next year.
It’s the only title among the top 10 in the App Store with a five-star rating, the highest possible, based on thousands of user reviews.
“There’s no such thing as bad publicity, right?” Creutz said. “Obviously, Kim Kardashian’s brand has driven people to download the game. But at this point, the game has taken on a life of its own.”

Brazil 2014: Arsenal Manager Reveals Why Super Eagles Failed

Arsenal Football Club manager, Arsene Wenger, at the weekend revealed what he thinks caused the Super Eagles failure at the just concluded FIFA World Cup hosted by Brazil.

Speaking to Beinsport, Wenger, who revealed he has been doing an examination of the African champions’ display in Brazil, stated that it was “not lack of talent” that affected the team but rather, it was “poor organisation”.

He said the Super Eagles would have gone beyond the round of 16 in the competition, if conditions were ideal.

“Nigeria had no solidarity. They showed the whole world the problems they had before the World Cup and it was the same with Cameroun. The problem was not lack of talent but with poor organization,” Wenger said.

The Arsenal manger, however, commended the Eagles’ first half display against eventual victors, France.

“Nigeria was not too bad against France. They had a good first half but could not maintain the momentum in the second half,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles have never been able to go beyond the round of 16 in any previous World Cup.

Renowned Islamic Cleric Indicts Politicians Over Boko Haram

Sheik Muyideen Bello, a popular Islamic cleric at the weekend, said it is Nigerian politicians that are sponsoring the Boko Haram terrorist group.

Daily Independent reports that, the cleric made the revelation while speaking at the 5th Annual Ramadan Public Lecture organised by member representing Lagos Mainland Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Moshood Oshun, at the Lagos City College, Yaba.

Bello, who also accused politicians of serving their self-interest instead of that of the citizens further accused leaders, especially office holders, of deceiving the masses.

According to him, terrorism which is recently being experienced by the country is a retribution for the bad attitude of the people in general.

Bello, who noted that truth has become a very scarce commodity in Nigeria said: “people now do whatever they like, some politicians are the real terrorists, they rule the people the way they like. There is no truth in them, they worship money, the leaders and the followers are corrupt. It didn’t start today and it will not change if we don’t tell ourselves the truth. We all do what we like and even some religious leaders have compromised because of money. They tell the leaders what they want to hear and not what they should tell them” Bello said.

The cleric who is renowned for is straightforwardness as a preacher, reiterated that whoever refused to tell the truth is a terrorist, say: “and we all live with terrorists in our various homes”.

“Prophet Muhammed was also a president in his own way, and we should all follow his footsteps as he led the people with the fear of God. God says he owns all resources in the country and in the world. I don’t believe we have any special terrorists in the country. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), set up by the government has not been prosecuting people in recent times, those that were arrested for fraud were not even prosecuted, we are all deceiving ourselves,” Bello said.
Boko Haram was founded in 2002, by Mohammed Yusuf, who was reportedly killed extra-judiciously while in police custody. The extremist under the new leadership of Abubakar Shekau, launched its first offensive in 2009, in an attempt to create an Islamic state. The sect initially focused on opposing Western education, as "Boko Haram" means "Western education is a sin" in the Hausa language. The sect was designated a terrorist group by US in 2013.

Four armed robbers who specialize in robbing with police uniforms have been arrested and paraded by the Lagos state Police command. The four men named Julius George, Samuel Orgah, Lucky Oliseh and Lucky Friday were arrested by the police force at the Ile Zik area on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on the 22nd of June Punch reports.

From their confessions, it was gathered that other operations carried out by the gang included robbing a trailer load of rice at Oju-Elegba area worth N4.5m and a tanker carrying engine oil worth N11m. Ring leader of the gang, 34 year old Julius George from Benue state who is married with children in his confessional statement said he led the other men into the act by deceiving them that he was a police man. He said he bought the police uniform materials in the market, made them into the uniforms and gave them to his gang members.
"This was not the first time we would use police uniforms for robbery. In 2013, I was arrested by the police and charged to court. I was remanded for some time, but my family came and I was released on bail. Later, the court discharged me for want of evidence. While in remand at the Kirikiri Prisons, I met Sam (Orgah). When I came out of prisons, a friend of mine called Benjamin invited me again for another job. I was asked to escort a truck of engine oil from Apapa to Mushin, because they still regarded me as a policeman. They paid me N5,000 when they offloaded.” he said
33 year old Samuel Orgah who is also from Benue state said he was an imprisoned armed robber who took to his bad ways after he regained his freedom in 2011. For Oliseh Lucky from Delta state, he said he came in contact with the gang leader,  George, only three weeks before their arrest when George invited him for the N8m robbery in Ile Zik area.
Friday Lucky who says he is a clearing and forwarding agent working at a shipping company in Apapa Lagos said he met George three months ago at Iyana-Oba and had never engaged in armed robbery. He said he was only invited to help collect money for Friday and did not know he was an armed robber
“I have never gone on an operation with Mopol before. He only invited me to come with him to collect money. I did not know it was robbery,” he said.
The Lagos Police PRO Ngozi Baide says the State men are currently being investigated.

South African Boy Killed After 'Changing Into A Tiger'

A Durban man, Sibusiso Madiya, has reportedly told a Regional Court in Durban, South Africa that he acted in self-defence when he killed a Chatsworth boy because the victim and his friends had transformed into tigers before his eyes.
IOL.co.za reports that the 26-year-old from Savannah Park pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder on Thursday, 10 July, 2014.
According to the report, Madiya told the court through his Legal Aid attorney, Hycenth Mlotshwa, that he saw the “tiger”, referring to the Grade 1 pupil Lindokuhle Mabhena, approach him at a Shallcross park in June last year and thought he was going to attack him.
The accused added that he had stabbed the boy with a knife he had found on the ground earlier.
"It was only after a group of people arrived that I realised it was not a tiger but a human being,"  Madiya reportedly said at the start of his murder trial on Thursday before magistrate Trevor Levitt.
Mlotshwa told the court his client believed in supernatural powers, adding that the accused saw fellow inmates transform into animals in the prison where is being held during the trial.
Prosecutor Krishen Shah, however, said the accused had been referred for mental observation and was deemed mentally fit to stand trial.
It was gathered that around midday on June 15 last year, Madiya was skateboarding at a park in Peak Street, Shallcross, when seven young children, who had been following him, approached him. He said they all suddenly transformed into tigers.

Also, we’ve been going round for musical tour; first one was in Mali, followed by another one in Portharcourt. We also performed during the Portharcourt carnival. Presently, we are fully back to the music scene and very soon we will be dropping our new album and that will be in two months’ time as we are still working on it.
Q. Fans have been worried over your absence on the music scene. What has been happening to you two?

REVEALED: Why Nigerians Need To Be Grateful To The Late Sanni Abacha

The opinion below is written by Azuka Onwuka, a popular Nigerian writer on social issues and it was first published by PUNCH online. You can follow him on Twitter @BrandAzuka.
Former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, unwittingly did Nigeria a big favour regarding our democracy. On May 29, 2014 Nigeria celebrated its 15 years of unbroken democracy in the Fourth Republic, which is about three times longer than the longest period of democracy we had had hitherto. If not for Abacha, this could not have been possible.
The First Republic had lasted five years and three and half months. The Second Republic lasted three years and exactly three months. That showed retrogression. After many postponements about handing over to the civilians, the Third Republic kicked off in a peculiar way: Gen. Ibrahim Babangida conducted governorship and legislative elections while he was still ruling the nation. That experiment, which started in 1991, was supposed to culminate in the conduct of the presidential election in 1993 and final handover to a democratic government.
Eventually, the presidential election held on June 12, 1993 was peaceful, free and fair, according to the reports of all observers. The electoral body began a state-by-state release of the result as collation was concluded in each state. Chief M.K.O. Abiola of the Social Democratic Party was ahead, winning in states which were assumed would be won by his opponent, Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. Then like a joke, the release of the results was suspended. While Nigerians were wondering what Babangida’s plan was, he announced the annulment of the election on June 23, 1993, to the consternation of most people. According to Babangida: “These steps were taken to save our judiciary from being ridiculed and politicised locally and internationally.”read more...
